MISSION STATEMENT

Promoting Bicycles, Cycling, Bike Safety, Health, Fitness, And A Green Environment In Our Inner Cities!!

OVERVIEW

The Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc. (IC3) organization grew out of a request by the community leaders organizing the Martin Luther King Jr. parade and celebration in Los Angeles, California, USA. For the benefit of the community, IC3 created an exciting bicycle race that took place before each parade. IC3 is a non-profit organization under IRS 501(c)3.

IC3 believes every child deserves a chance to strive for a positive future filled with endless opportunities regardless of their circumstances. Many inner city youths are not being given that chance. They are focusing their energies on drugs, gangs, and other caustic behavior early in life.

ABOUT US

The Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc. (IC3) organization grew out of a request by the community leaders organizing the Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and celebration. Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc. has been active in Los Angeles for over 20 years thanks to Don Harris. Don loved the sport so much that he joined a cycling club and competed in many races. He wanted to share his love of cycling with others so he formed the Inner City Cycling Connection, Inc., a non-profit organization, which focuses on developing cycling in our inner city schools and educating our youths in the inner city on maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Don, a devoted Christian and a Vietnam combat veteran, has been a member of Wilshire United Methodist Church since 1979. He is presently the president of the Wilshire United Methodist Men’s Fellowship congregation. The social agenda for this group includes developing programs that address aggression and domestic violence, teen pregnancy, juvenile mentorship, STD’s, HIV/AIDS, other serious health and wellness issues, physical fitness, high unemployment, and life stress related issues.

Don Harris has been very interested in the life and works of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. From this passion, in 2001, Don formed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic Bike Races which was held on Martin Luther King Jr. holiday before the parade in Los Angeles, California. Highlights from the classic were captured by local TV stations in L.A. Each year, the classic was presented as the centerpiece to a Cycling Bike Festival held in the South Los Angeles community of Leimert Park. The all day affair includes various class category competitions - males, females, and pros; a street festival with emphasis on the bicycle industry and its advocates; and a community recreational cycling challenge. Visit the upcoming events portion of this website for the exact time and date of the next Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic Bike Races and Cycling Bike Festival.

Don has many goals. He has long been a strong advocate of promoting cycling in our inner city communities and schools. He plans on fulfilling this objective by providing our inner city schools with financial grants and equipment to promote cycling.

Secondly, with help from the business community leaders, Don intends to open a cycling club where youths can be trained for events such as the Watts summer programs, the Amgen Tour of California, the Olympics, the Tour de France, and other cycling events. Don is presently employed and is in management at the Los Angeles Water Reclamation Department. He has been there for the past nine years.

THE 2026 INNER CITY CYCLING EXTRAVAGANZA

The 2026 Inner-City Cycling Extravaganza proudly recognizes Dr. Michael Batie—Professor, cyclist, and visionary leader—for his groundbreaking journey “Cycling for Math Across America.” Dr. Batie pedaled from Los Angeles to Galveston, Texas, not just for the love of cycling, but to spotlight a critical issue: math literacy in underserved communities. His ride in 2001 was more than a physical feat—it was a call to arms, a rallying cry for engineers, scientists, educators, and professionals across disciplines to join the fight against the math achievement gap that continues to hold back too many of our youth. We are honored to welcome Dr. Batie as a collaborative partner in the production of our 2026 Inner-City Cycling Extravaganza. Together, we will combine the power of cycling, education, and community engagement to inspire new generations and address the pressing need for STEM empowerment in our inner cities.
